What is SIM card re-registration?

SIM card re-registration is the process defined in the Information and Communication Technologies (Registration of SIM) Regulations 2023 where Emtel which is a service provider has to collect, verify and record information of its existing holders/users of SIM Cards.
Why is SIM card re-registration mandatory?

SIM Card re-registration is mandatory to comply with the Information and Communication Technologies (Registration of SIM) Regulations 2023.

The aim of this re-registration is to ensure that every SIM Card holder has his SIM Card(s) duly registered under his identity in order to avoid any SIM Card deactivation.
Who need to re-register their SIM card(s)?

All Emtel SIM Card holders or eSIM users are required to re-register their SIM card(s).
These include citizens, non-citizens residing in Mauritius, public body, corporate body company, diplomatic mission or any other organisation.
How do I re-register my Emtel SIM cards?

To register your Emtel SIM card, download MoEmtel mobile application from App Store (IOS/Apple), Google Play (Android) or Huawei AppGallery. You can now re-register your Emtel SIM cards as well for your closed ones.
What documents are required by “Mauritian Citizens” for SIM card re-registration?
Mauritian Citizens are required to provide the following:
- National ID card/personal details of Passport; and
- Recent Utility bill (less than 3 months)
We will also take a coloured photograph of the applicant and verify same against the National Identity Card photo.
What documents are required by “non-citizen residents of Mauritius” for SIM card re-registration?
Non-citizen residents of Mauritius are required to provide the following
- Personal Details of Passport;
- Unique Identification Number
- Residence permit or occupation permit; and
- Recent Utility bill or any other proof of address
We will also take a coloured photograph of the applicant and verify same against the photo from the passport.
I have been using a SIM card for years but it is not registered on my name, can I re-register it?

Yes. All holders of SIM Cards can re-register the SIM Card(s) they are using by providing the mandatory information/documentation as per the Information and Communication Technologies (Registration of SIM) Regulations 2023.
What if I do not want my picture to be taken?

Taking of photograph is one of the mandatory requirements of the Information and Communication Technologies (Registration of SIM) Regulations 2023 for real time verification process. No re-registration can be conducted without photograph.
Is there a fee for the SIM card re-registration?

No fee is applicable for the re-registration
What will happen if I do not re-register my SIM card?

Your SIM will be de-activated.
I do not have internet access, how can I re-register?

You may ask anyone having internet access and who has downloaded MOEmtel app to re-register your SIM card or you can visit any Emtel showroom.
Can I re-register more than one (1) SIM card? Or how many SIM cards can one re-register?

Yes. There is no limitation on the number of SIM Card a person can re-register.
Can a minor, holder of a SIM card re-register same?

SIM cards of minor shall be registered under the name of the parent or legal guardian.
I am currently abroad but using an Emtel SIM card. Do I still have to re-register?

Yes, you need to register your SIM through MoEmtel application to avoid deactivation. You can use MoEmtel app abroad.
How do I register more than one SIM cards?

If you have multiple SIMs, you may do bulk re-registration by choosing “NIC” option when doing the process, you will receive all the list of numbers registered under your name.

Do I need Wi-Fi or mobile data to use MoEmtel app?

Yes, Wi-Fi or mobile data is required to use the app. MoEmtel app is zero-rated i.e., Emtel mobile customers will not pay data charges when using the app
I am not able to scan my NIC, what should I do?

Make sure that there is no glare when scanning your NIC and you hold your NIC in your hands when scanning.

If you still cannot scan your NIC, contact us on 8972.
My face liveness is unsuccessful, what should I do?

Contact us on 8972. Our team will be happy to assist you.
What are the penalties of providing false or misleading information for the re-registration of SIM cards?

Any person who for the purpose of re-registering a SIM or M2M SIM furnishes false or misleading information shall commit an offence and shall on conviction, be liable to a fine not exceeding Rs 50,000/- and to imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year.

Any person who contravenes the Information and Communication Technologies (Registration of SIM) Regulations 2023 shall commit an offence and shall on conviction, be liable to a fine not exceeding Rs 50,000/- and to imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year.
